2027 Ford Super Duty Guide: F-250 vs. F-350, Towing & Comparisons

Woody Anderson Ford • Huntsville, Alabama • Reviewed November 4, 2026

The 2027 Ford Super Duty pickup offers a 7.3L gas V8 or a 6.7L High Output Power Stroke diesel. Choosing between F-250 and F-350 starts with what you carry as well as what you tow. Passengers, tools, hitch equipment and trailer tongue or pin weight all use the truck’s payload allowance. This guide explains the differences, shows real configuration examples from Ford’s order-guide supplement and compares current 2027 Ford, Chevrolet and Ram engine specifications.

What’s new for the 2027 Ford Super Duty?

For 2027 pickups, Ford simplifies the engine lineup to the 7.3L gas V8 and 6.7L High Output Power Stroke diesel. The previous 6.8L gas engine and standard-output 6.7L diesel are removed from the pickup lineup. The High Output diesel is standard on F-450 pickups and available on F-250 and F-350.

  • 7.3L gas output: 420 horsepower and 445 lb-ft of torque for 2027.
  • New Carhartt® Package: available on XLT Crew Cab single-rear-wheel 4×4 configurations, with distinctive exterior details and Carhartt-themed interior materials.
  • Expanded off-road choices: a new XL Off-Road 35-inch Tire Package; Tremor availability expands to XL with required STX Appearance and XL Driver Assist packages, and to selected long-wheelbase SRW configurations.
  • Additional equipment choices: an available digital rearview mirror on Lariat, King Ranch and Platinum, plus Neptune Blue and expanded Iconic Silver Metallic availability.

Package, cab, bed, drivetrain and trim restrictions apply. Verify the current order guide and the individual vehicle’s window sticker before ordering. This guide covers Super Duty pickups; chassis-cab configurations have separate ratings and equipment.

2027 F-250 vs. F-350: which truck should you choose?

Start with the required payload and trailer rating, then choose the cab, bed and trim. An F-350 may give you additional capacity in a similar cab layout, while a dual-rear-wheel truck adds width you will need to account for in parking and everyday use. Neither a model badge nor a diesel engine by itself tells you how much a specific truck can carry.

On a phone, swipe comparison tables sideways to see every column.

2027 Super Duty pickup configurations at a glance
Choice Rear-wheel layout What to compare before deciding
F-250 Single rear wheel (SRW) Check whether its specific payload, axle, GVWR package and tow rating meet your loaded trailer and cargo needs.
F-350 SRW Single rear wheel Compare its actual door-label payload with a similarly equipped F-250 when passengers, tools or fifth-wheel pin weight use more capacity.
F-350 DRW Dual rear wheels (dually) Consider for heavier carrying requirements; check overall width, rear-axle rating, hitch equipment and loaded trailer compatibility.
F-450 pickup Dual rear wheels; diesel Evaluate for demanding towing applications. Higher model numbering does not automatically mean a higher payload rating.

Cab, bed and trim choices

Regular Cab and SuperCab configurations are offered in XL and XLT. Crew Cab configurations offer XL, XLT, Lariat, King Ranch and Platinum choices. SRW pickups offer 6.75-foot and 8-foot bed configurations depending on cab and equipment; F-350 and F-450 dually pickups use the long bed. Confirm the exact cab/bed/drivetrain combination rather than assuming every trim offers every layout.

A longer bed can help with cargo and trailer clearance, but also changes the truck’s overall length. For fifth-wheel shoppers, check the hitch manufacturer’s turning-clearance requirements and truck/trailer height relationship before selecting a short or long bed.

2027 Super Duty gas vs. diesel engines

2027 Ford Super Duty pickup engine specifications
Engine Horsepower Torque Transmission
7.3L gas V8 420 hp at 5,350 rpm 445 lb-ft at 4,250 rpm 10-speed automatic
6.7L High Output Power Stroke V8 turbo diesel 500 hp at 2,600 rpm 1,200 lb-ft at 1,600 rpm TorqShift 10-speed automatic

The gas-versus-diesel decision should match your workload. Compare purchase price, how often you tow, loaded trailer weight, maintenance requirements and the specific truck’s available payload. Diesel torque and its engine exhaust brake are relevant to heavy towing, but choosing diesel does not automatically increase the truck’s carrying capacity.

Horsepower, torque, payload and towing are separate attributes; maximum ratings may require different configurations and may not be achieved together.

Why don’t Ford Super Duty diesel window stickers list MPG?

Super Duty pickups fall outside the EPA’s standard light-duty fuel-economy labeling requirements, so their window stickers do not carry the familiar EPA city, highway and combined MPG estimates. The distinction is based on vehicle classification, not diesel fuel alone; gasoline Super Duty pickups are affected too.

FuelEconomy.gov, the DOE/EPA consumer resource, identifies pickups with a gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) over 8,500 lb and an interior bed length of at least 72 inches as exempt from these consumer fuel-economy testing requirements. It specifically lists Ford F-250/F-350 models as examples. GVWR is the truck’s maximum permitted total loaded weight, not its empty weight or trailer tow rating.

How should you compare fuel use? A dashboard average or an owner’s reported MPG is not an EPA rating. Compare similar trucks doing similar work, and distinguish unloaded driving from towing. Speed, terrain, weather, idling and cargo can affect results. See EPA’s explanation of real-world mileage factors.

Why can a diesel F-250 have less payload than a gas F-250?

Payload is the weight available for occupants and added cargo within the truck’s ratings. The engine and other installed equipment affect the truck’s own weight. At the same gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR), a heavier configuration can leave less capacity for what you add.

Ford’s March 23, 2026 supplemental order guide gives a useful example. Both F-250 rows below are Crew Cab 4×4 pickups with a 159.7-inch wheelbase and fixed 10,000-lb GVWR. The gas configuration’s listed maximum payload is 771 lb higher. The F-350 examples show why the GVWR and wheel/tire configuration also need to be part of the comparison.

Options, packages and accessories change carrying capacity. Use the label on the actual truck’s doorjamb; always secure cargo properly.

Does every F-350 carry 7,900 pounds?

No. The supplement’s 7,900-lb maximum applies to a properly equipped F-350 dual-rear-wheel Regular Cab 4×2 with the 7.3L gas engine and Gas Heavy-Duty Payload Package. It is not the payload rating of a diesel Crew Cab or every F-350. Ford lists separate ratings for those configurations.

A simple payload budget before you choose a truck

As an illustration only, a truck with a 4,000-lb door-label allowance, carrying 600 lb of people, 200 lb of added hitch equipment and 300 lb of other cargo, has 2,900 lb of that allowance remaining for additional load such as trailer pin weight. That arithmetic does not establish a tow rating: the truck must also stay within its axle, tire, hitch, GVWR, GCWR and trailer limits. Use actual loaded weights and avoid counting equipment already reflected in the truck’s label twice.

How much can a 2027 Super Duty tow?

The answer depends on the exact truck and the type of trailer connection. Conventional towing uses the rear receiver hitch; fifth-wheel and gooseneck trailers connect in the bed. A rating for one towing method cannot be substituted for another.

Ford’s 2027 product guide lists maximum available conventional towing of up to 22,000 lb for F-250, 25,000 lb for F-350 SRW and 28,000 lb for F-350 DRW with the High Output diesel and required equipment. These are configuration-specific maximums, not the rating of every diesel truck. F-250 conventional towing above 18,200 lb requires the High-Capacity Axle Upgrade Package and specified tires. Cargo, passengers, options and accessories affect the usable rating.

For a fifth-wheel, check payload early. The trailer’s loaded pin weight rests on the truck, alongside people, hitch equipment and cargo. A trailer can be below a published tow maximum yet exceed the particular truck’s payload or rear-axle limit.

Which available features help with towing and work?

  • Onboard Scales with Smart Hitch: provides load estimates, including trailer tongue load. It supports planning; it does not increase the truck’s ratings.
  • Pro Trailer Hitch Assist: helps align the truck’s hitch with a conventional trailer coupler.
  • Pro Trailer Backup Assist with Trailer Reverse Guidance: helps with trailer maneuvering after the trailer is configured in the system.
  • 360-Degree Camera and trailer-view features: help provide additional visibility around the truck and trailer, depending on equipment.
  • Pro Power Onboard: available 2-kW power for compatible tools or other electrical equipment within the system’s limits.

Availability varies by trim and package. Driver-assist systems supplement an attentive driver; they do not make the truck autonomous. Follow the Owner’s Manual for operating instructions and limitations.

What do those differences mean for a shopper?

The Ford gas engine has more published horsepower than the gas engines shown here; Chevrolet’s gas engine has more torque. Chevrolet’s announced diesel has the highest horsepower and torque in this table, while Ford’s diesel figures exceed Ram’s. None of those facts alone determines which individual truck can safely tow your trailer.

For a useful F-250-versus-2500 or F-350-versus-3500 comparison, line up the cab, bed, two- or four-wheel drive, SRW or DRW layout, axle ratio, GVWR, installed options and hitch type. Then compare actual payload labels, the applicable towing charts, purchase price and the features you will use. At Woody Anderson Ford, we can walk through that configuration check with the Ford trucks you are considering.

What should you bring to a Super Duty shopping visit?

  1. Trailer information: year, make, model, connection type and actual loaded trailer weight when available—not just the advertised empty weight.
  2. Tongue or pin weight: actual loaded measurements when available, plus hitch equipment details.
  3. Passenger and cargo needs: people, toolboxes, tools, bed cargo and planned accessories.
  4. Everyday requirements: parking space, garage clearance, cab seating, bed length and how frequently you tow.
  5. Truck identifiers: VINs or stock numbers for a direct comparison of equipment and ratings.

For Huntsville and North Alabama shoppers, the practical question is whether the truck works for both the loaded trip and the ordinary workweek. We can help narrow the choices before you commit to a particular engine, package or rear-wheel layout.

2027 Ford Super Duty frequently asked questions

Is the 6.8L gas engine offered in the 2027 Super Duty pickup?

No. Ford’s 2027 pickup product guide lists the 7.3L V8 as the only gas engine and the 6.7L High Output Power Stroke as the diesel choice. Chassis-cab information should be checked separately.

Does an F-350 have to be a dually?

No. The 2027 F-350 pickup offers single-rear-wheel and dual-rear-wheel configurations. Compare the ratings of the exact truck rather than assuming all F-350s have the same capacity.

Should I choose an F-250 or F-350 for a fifth-wheel?

Choose the configuration that accommodates the loaded trailer, pin weight, hitch, occupants and cargo within all of its ratings. Start by comparing door-label payload and rear-axle capacity, then verify the applicable fifth-wheel towing chart and clearances.

Does the Tremor package increase the tow rating?

Do not assume so. Ford provides separate Tremor ratings and configuration notes. Check the Tremor-specific row and footnotes in the towing guide and the truck’s own labels.

Can I use a VIN to find a Super Duty towing rating?

Ford provides a public VIN towing calculator for supported vehicles. Use the calculator link above, and confirm the configuration, payload label, hitch limits and loaded weights before towing.

Can Woody Anderson Ford help compare a gas and diesel truck?

Yes. Bring your workload, trailer information and the stock numbers or VINs you are considering. Our team can help compare equipment and published ratings, then discuss current availability and pricing.
